As yet untitled
Nee Year, new me, I feel so so guilty not posting like I promised, but…
Here’s something I found in a notebook, no idea where it will get used, I just liked the way it turned out.
"You're erasing me"
"no I'm not"
"You are, where's all my stuff?"
"I need the room, it's all safe, in those boxes"
"What the ones marked "charity" or the ones marked "tip"?"
Abi looked over at the 2 large boxes and pulled out a smaller shoe box marked "memories".
"no, this one"
"It’s a bit small"
"You always told me size doesn’t matter".
Abi Sniggered out loud to herself.
It had to be done, he'd been dead 2 years now, he wasn't coming back and she needed the room. All her friends had told her it wasn’t healthy to have her spare room left as a memorial to her dead boyfriend. "Keep a few knick-knacks" they said, "something to remember him by"
"At Least get rid of the holey underpants" said Sam, her best mate of lord knows how many years.
¥
That was last year, now here she was, sat on the floor of her spare room with Sam, trying to decide if the local charity would appreciate a donation of the complete Babylon 5 box set. The 2 boxes still empty. The small memories box had turned into a pile in the corner.
"ok, not erasing, but it's only been 2 years" Abi said out loud. Her best mate Sam, looked over at her with a confused look.
¥
It had started 6 months ago, the voice in her head. Whilst browsing the shelves in the co-op, he had reminded her that she needed to get the car taxed and that she was about to pick up the wrong sort of bread - seeded, she hates seeded.
She'd been feeling stressed and had been thinking about him. Him being her dead boyfriend, Vince. He was the sensible one, her subconscious had used his voice to remind her of the car tax and the bread.
A week after that, she was sat in her front room watching Star Wars.
"but you hate Star Wars" said Vince, who was sat next to her in his usual spot on the sofa.
"I didn’t say I hated it, I'd just never watched it all the way through" Abi responded.
¥
Come to think of it, since that day, neither of her cats had gone into the spare room and would avoid the sofa……
¥
"Hello, earth calling Abi, come in Abi.."
Abi turned round, Sam was holding the offending pants and looking bewildered at her.
"uhhh, away with the fairies again?"
Sam dropped the pants into the box marked "tip" and stood with her hands on her hips. Suddenly aware of the situation, Abi dived at the box and pulled out the underwear.
"those were my favourite"
"those were his favourite" she said, folding them and putting them back onto the pile.
"its 3 years, he's been gone 3 years"
Abi scowled at Sam. She was right, she was always right. No one likes a know it all.
"only 3 years? Feels like only yesterday"
"do you want the Babylon 5 set" asked Abi, offering the boxset to Sam, who turned her nose up at it, but took it and placed it, no dumped it in the Charity box.
"no I have the directors cut, the writers preferred cut and the original VHS, I don’t need this"
"Neeeeeerrrrrrrrrddddddddd"
Abi giggled, Vince was just as bad as Sam, why they never got on, Abi couldn’t fathom.
"shes a nerd, I'm a gamer geek".
"For a nerd, his collection is pitiful" said Sam, looking around the room at a handful of Sci fi and horror dvds.
Abi sat back down in the well worn gaming chair. For what he lacked in DVDs he made up in Xbox and PS games.
"I have to get back to work, love you, I'll bring dinner" Sam hugged Abi, picked up her bag and left.
"I want at least 2 things in each box, by the time I get back".
"Ok".
"I'll give you 2 things" Abi thought and stuck up her 2 middle fingers at Sam's back.
"love you too" called out Sam.
"She's got such a crush on you"
Abi blushed. She waited till she heard the front door close.
"Are you still jealous? She's my oldest friend, she's been helping me get over you"
"Get over me?" the voice seemed hurt. "she just wants to get in your pants".
"I've told you, and her, I'm not into fanny, I'm not into anything, anymore"
"good, I really don’t want to watch you doing it with some stranger".
Abi huffed. She didn’t really feel like doing anything. Not just sex, anything. It all reminded her of him. They'd moved in together 6 years ago, into his flat - sorry their flat, no her flat now. Most of the furniture being hers as he'd been a typical bachelor, having a well-furnished gaming room with desk, PC and chair, with the rest of the flat looking like an abandoned drug den.
"It wasn’t abandoned….it just needed a woman's touch.
"It needed a flamethrower." Abi replied, standing up.
"well the box set has 4 seasons, so if I put two in here and two in that box. There you go, two things in each box.

Feeling pleased with herself, Abi wandered into the kitchen to find a snack. It was a small kitchen, they'd painted it bright yellow to make it seem more cheery and airy than it was, the floor was laminate, badly installed laminate as Vince had "had a go", Sam had offered to get a professional in, although it seemed more like threatened to get someone in to "sort out Vince's botch ups". Abi had resisted as she found them endearing, however it was getting annoying having to lock the bathroom door with a coat hanger, only flush the loo once you'd filled up the cistern.
"Im a postie not a handyman, you screwed up the shelves
Abi looked at the wonky shelves. So what if you can only put light things on them, they were purely decorative. Abi chuckled remembering how proud she was she had put them up.
Opening the fridge Abi was greeted with nothing, an onion, half a tube of tomato paste and a tube of hemerobiid cream, which was Vince's.
"maybe I should do a food shop."
Abi wandered over to her laptop and switched it on.
